Today I am posting Scott's last letter from the mission field.  He returns home this Friday evening, July 25 at 8pm - American Airlines in Ontario.  We are so very excited!  Love love love my boy!  What joy this experience has brought to my life and I feel so honored by  my son and his willingness to serve the Lord and the people of Korea.  I have loved having a missionary out there in the great big world, but I CANNOT wait to see him and hug him and look at him and listen to him play the guitar and then go out to breakfast with him and later buy him a Western Bacon Cheeseburger and chocolate shake and to just spend time with him....   I am excited to watch him move on into the next grand adventure of his life.

What a tremendous blessing to have this boy, this man, in my life.  I am so grateful.

Love you Scott.  Thank you.

Hey Everyone!

This is the last time I get to do that!  This has been a great week just like all the others.  So many good things happening in missionary work.  Always will be.
Last monday wasn't pday so we got to spend it proselyting which was pretty good.  Nothing too crazy just a lot of talking to people on the streets.  That's a good thing for me though.  I love talking with people on the street.  I really hope I can keep that habit in America.  It's a fun thing being able to just strike up conversations at a random.  Good for making friends too.^^
Tuesday was good.  I shipped a package home!  I'll probably beat it back to the states is the funny thing though.  We went on exchanges with some elders.  I was with Elder Westbrook who is just the man.  I love that guy.  He is actually the first missionary that I trained's MTC companion and he goes hard in missionary work.  It really was a pleasure to work with him.  We went to his ward's ward mission leader's school where he works as a dean and talked to him and he toured us around the school a bit.  It was really cool and really simple.  Showed me just how easy it is to do some member missionary work when the opportunities arise.  He just took us around and introduced us to a lot of the faculty at the school and we talked to them.  Nothing too crazy, but now all these people have something to tie back to the church.  It was a good experience.
Later we met with this new investigator who is the man!  He knew the church from when he was young because of the father of a friend of his.  That was 40 years ago.  He went on a picnic with the ward and a missionary killed a snake and this guy thought it was super cool!  Now this guy is an investigator 40 years later, and really wants to come to church as soon as he has time.  It's amazing the impact that a simple act can have on someone.
The next day we unexchanged and came back to our ward building for district meeting.  It was good.  We learned about how to help investigators get an answer to questions they have about the Book of Mormon.  The district leader we have is a good one.  He's Korean and I really am going to miss him.  I'm gonna miss everyone here really.
Thursday was temple day which was awesome!  The temple was really great.  I loved it so much.  On the way over I was a little down just because it's my last normal temple day as a missionary and I just wasn't stoked about that.  As soon as I entered the temple I saw President Morrise and he was smiling at me and I shook his hand and it just made me feel all the world better.  Not to mention I was in the temple which always makes things way better of course.  After we went to the biggest church in our mission and played basketball.  That was way too fun.  I was being super goofy which was really great.  There was a serious game going on on one side and on the other side it was just goofing around which was more my speed.  Missionaries only play half court by the way.
Friday we went on another exchange which was also pretty good.  I was with Elder Champion who is also pretty awesome as you may assume from his name.  He's a solid missionary too.  He's actually serving in probably the hardest area in our mission right now because there is a church being constructed there and a lot of the other local churches are really protesting it and it makes it unpleasant because the things they say about the church are just entirely fallacious.  We got to talk to a lot of people which was good for me and Elder Champion is good at talking to people.  It was a fun last exchange for the mission.
Saturday was interesting.  We met this previous investigator and he really likes me.  Basically my goal with this lesson was to make it so that he would continue to meet the missionaries even after I left.  It seemed to work out.  He also made it to church yesterday.
We also had english class and then a family home evening.  It was a good last english class.  I'm going to miss a lot of those people.  Good folks.  This one guy gave me this super sick pen!  And then this other sister gave me some book.  I will try and read it maybe...  I'm not sure though.  I should read it.
The family home evening was fun.  I played guitar and didn't do very good, but it's whatever.  It's not the end of the world.  There was a less active member who came and played too.  He plays classical guitar and is really good!  But... he kind of has that classical musician attitude which is somewhat frustrating.  It was a good night though!
Sunday was really good too.  At church I had a talk and I talked about truth.  It was okay.  I could have done better, but it was alright.  After church I got a lot of pictures with members that I like.  Super good people.  Love em all.
Well, I guess this is my last sign off.  I really have enjoyed my missionary service more than anything else.  Ever.  It was the best thing for me, and is the best thing for everyone if they want to grow.  I love this service.  I love the gospel.  I love Korea and the Korean people.  I will never forget this place.  It's the best thing I've done with my time and effort ever.  I'm so grateful for all of the opportunities that I've had here and will have in the future.  I know God loves us and prepares his paths for us.

Hello Everybody!!!

This week has been good.  I really am starting to have to make sure I enjoy every moment of my mission, not because it's hard to, but because the time is just so short.  I hate it how every day seems to just get shorter and shorter.  I understand that everybody simply has to go home at some point, but it's a lot harder to accept than I thought.
REGARDLESS!!!!  good week.
Last week we met this investigator that we had met before and the guy is super golden, but he seems to have the same problem that most of the golden investigators have.  They live elsewhere.  They always live elsewhere.  He lives in a neighboring area and we taught him there in an attempt to try and refer him to the missionaries there, but he didn't seem to interested in being taught by anyone else and said that he wants to go to church in our area anyways.  Normally would be fine, no big deal but he wanted to meet this morning too which also isn't a problem usually but he wanted to meet at 10 in that other area, so we agreed to meet, but we also were going to refer him to the elders in that area at the meeting too.  We did try to and we had to go so the other elders taught the lesson anyways, but we didn't really tell the investigator beforehand very well.  As a result he was a little bummed.  He still wants to meet with us.  Not too sure what to do with that now...
So wednesday we wanted to pull a bunch of weeds at the church.  It didn't seem like a big deal but it most certainly was.  The first big thing was that when we were intending to start, it was raining sooooooooo hard.  I haven't seen rain like that in a long time.  BUT as most big rain does here, it calmed down pretty quickly.  We started and we got up a bunch of it and realized just how big of a task it was.  I'll take pictures and send them of the parts that we finished, but it's not as much as I would like to have finished certainly.  We don't really have time to finish it if we want to proselyte as well...
Thursday we went on exchanges with some elders and I was with a guy, Elder Meeks.  He's pretty cool.  He graduated early from high school to come on his mission as soon as he could.  He's a pretty solid guy too.  We only had one appointment but it went alright.  It's the super buddhist guy that wants to learn english mostly, but respects our gospel time.  We read 2 Nephi 2 and it was good.  He really was actually curious about some of the things we think about the Plan of Salvation.  He also spoke Korean to me for the first time!  That made me feel kind of good.  It's frustrating sometimes when people won't speak korean to me when their english isn't very good.  Also Elder Kim's knee was killing him.  He could barely walk, but we still went on exchanges regardless.  I love Elder Kim.  He's the best.
Friday we finished up the exchange and did some more weeding which was as fun as that could be.  Actually it was interesting because it wasn't like it was bad in itself.  I was just kind of bummed because I wanted to be out talking to people about the gospel, but since we started the job we needed to try and finish up before we had other people coming to church in the coming days.
Saturday we had more weeding to finish up and we pretty much finished, but I came to the realization that pretty much the whole area where we were working is an ant farm...  ridiculous, but that's okay.  That night we also had english class which was fun for me and my companion but the sisters were supposed to teach the "advanced" class, but now there's this big confusion and advanced class became intermediate and intermediate became advanced.  I feel bad for some of the people because it's just us not being organized.  Also part of the problem is that everybody knows that I'm going home and for some reason want to talk with me even thought I don't teach the free talking...  I just feel bad for some of the people involved.  We're gonna fix that up this week though.
That night we had a ping pong activity which was good.  Being that I am american and haven't played ping pong since I was a child, I am far from the best, but that's okay!  I was definitely the best american there... also I was the only American there, but that's not the point!~  I felt like it wasn't the best use of time, but it was good for some people I think.
Sunday was interesting.  We didn't have any investigators at church, BUT!  I cam to this awesome realization as a result of it.  For the past 10 weeks or so, last week excluded, we have had at least 1 investigator at church and up to 3.  Everyone of those weeks, I have called the Bishop and other ward leaders telling them that there will be investigators at church and who it is, what they need, that sort of thing, like it says to in PMG, and they always showed up.  This past Saturday night, I forgot to, or maybe was just too lazy, I'm not sure, but I didn't.  As a result nobody came.  There was people who could have made it but they decided not to in light of wanting to sleep more or things like that.  If there is ever a mission everywhere that thinks there is a key indicator that they cannot control as a missionary, they are wrong.  Simply put.  Yes, you can't make someone be baptized, you can't drag somebody to church, but if you are doing what you're supposed to, the Lord will help out.  That's with everything.
Why can't I figure these things out earlier!?!?  Maybe I was too prideful before or too dumb to realize it before.  Regardless, I know now, and I can apply it for at least a little longer, and can share what I know with other missionaries.
Well, this is my second to last time emailing from Korea, potentially my last depending on how I feel next week.  I'll probably email next week, but you never know.
I hope you all have a great week!

Hello Everybody!

I hope you all had a good week.  I did.  It's getting really hot though.  It's bearable, but the humidity and such makes it so that a lot of people get stressed and headaches so they don't want to talk as much so our best proselyting time is definitely in the evenings.  Also by the same accord, because it is so hot out in the afternoons when you offer people the shelter of an air-conditioned church it seems a little bit more inviting!  So all in all it's a win weather pattern I'd say.  Monsoon season still hasn't started for some reason so were doing good for the time being!
Monday we played soccer for Pday and I got to hang out with murphy for a little bit!  It was super fun but because I hadn't worn my cleats in months and the field we played on was turf and really hot, I got this blister that was massive and nasty.  It's all good now, but it was kind of funny for the time being.  I wish I got a picture, but you know blisters are all more or less the same...
Murphy was wearing a shirt with james dean on it and that's kind of funny because I guess the new cool thing in Korea is to tell elder clawson that he looks like james dean.  That being said it was kind of as if murphy was wearing a shirt of me.  If you want to see the picture murphy should have possibly maybe perhaps posted it on facebook by now.
Other exciting thing of that day.  I was with a couple of other missionaries and there was this newer missionary who I was talking to and he asked how "old I was in the mission" and when I told him I go home soon, his response was "don't get trunky".  For those of you who don't know trunky means that you let your desire to go home get in the way of missionary work.  Not okay.  BUT the cool part was that my companion said resoundingly that "Elder Clawson is NOT trunky".  Success.  Still gotta keep going though.  It's not over yet!!!
Tuesday was kind of a long day because we had Mission Leadership Council which is where all the zone leaders and more or less sister equivalents of zone leaders get together and talk about the state of the mission.  It was pretty cool.  We worked on what will be the motto of the mission for the future.  I posed the idea YOSO! or You Only Serve Once, but the problem with that is that with a lot of people it's not true.  That would be condemning to anyone who wished to serve a mission as a senior couple or eventually got called to be a mission president at some point.  That got shut down, but it's okay.  I had fun while it lasted.  THe motto that we came up with was "we are the message" which is pretty true.  While it was no YOSO, it's a pretty solid motto.
Wednesday was kind of sad.  We had intended to meet with this family that we had met with a couple times, but last week the wife was sick so couldn't meet.  This week we also couldn't meet because the wife ended up having a miscarriage.  They said that they wouldn't be able to meet for a while but that they would let us know when it's okay.  I wish we could meet right NOW to share about the plan of salvation, but we can't force it on people.  If only.
We also met with this painter guy who has been meeting with us but not an investigator for a little while.  This week we were finally able to get a real lesson with him and he may not be super interested but because he likes us so much, he's trying to be interested.  Super nice guy.  We read the intro to the Book of Mormon, and he seemed to like it.
We also met a previous investigator that had been in the hospital that day too.  It was okay but that's the filibuster guy and he wanted to meet at mcdonalds so it wasn't the best meeting, but we figured out where he's at a little more.  He said he just wants to go to our church until I go home.  Sad face.  We'll try and get some more desire there though.
Thursday we had zone training which was my last one.  Yikes.  Not cool.  It was good though.  I really was worried but it went well.  Right after we finished I was worried that we didn't do a very good job, but a lot of people said it was really good.  Obviously no one is going to say it was bad, well that's not true, but I felt good in the end.
That night another missionary from the Busan mission came up to take this evaluation for the Korean military.  I also knew that guy from my first ward here.  Super weird.  Guy was really cool to see again though.  He's a new missionary and already seems to want to work hard so good thing!
Friday we didn't have too much going on unfortunately, but that's okay.
Saturday was really interesting.  We were on an exchange from the day before at first but nothing too weird happened with that.  English class was pretty much the same as always but something really interesting happened afterwards.  There's this one english class member who is kind of a pot stirrer.  People get frustrated with him, including us because he's kind of an investigator and always just tries to teach us.  I was trasnferring some of the contacts from our phone to the sister missionaries phone after class and he came back with some snacks for us.  He had done that a bunch of times before and I was frustrated at first because I thought it was just getting in the way of us proselyting which is all I really wanted to do.
After a little bit of talking we looked over and the sun was setting and it looked super cool!  We decided to take some pictures of it and he wanted to take a picture together and then all the sudden I felt like I could see this guy as God sees him.  I really felt like I was looking at everybody that I saw through Heavenly Father's eyes.  I don't really know how to explain it but even though this guy likes coming to church and english class, but doesn't really want to learn from us, I could still see heavenly Father's love for him.  That feeling stuck around for a while even into the next day.
The next day at church I felt like I needed to bear my testimony about it because it was fast sunday and it was really cool.  It was a really good experience.  Also was my last chance to share my testimony in church on a fast sunday in Korea.  Good last one.
That afternoon we met these guys from Bangladesh which was really cool.  They don't really have a christian background but we were able to share about Christ and it was really cool.
It's been a really good week.  Looking forward to the coming week too!

Hope you all have a good week!

Hey Everybody!

This week has been good, BUT since today I have kind of specific plans for hanging out with my good buddy murphy! this email will be somewhat abridged!  SORRY!
This week was good.  Lots of interesting things with some new investigators.  We have so many people right now that just have no interest but want to learn english and we are just trying to weed them out sort of.  So frustrating when the only people who will listen to you are those that just want to learn english, but worse things have happened!  We could not be finding investigators, BUT we are.
One of those guys is super awesome.  He originally met the sister missionaries in a restaurant and asked if they were missionaries, and what they were doing in Korea.  They said that they had english class like 15 minutes from then and he decided to come.  This week we were able to meet him, and this man is soooooo prepared.  Only problem is there's another member of english class that has recently decided to come to church that he really doesn't see eye to eye with.  So much so that the super awesome guy doesn't feel comfortable coming to church because he doesn't like being around this guy so much.  I really am curious as to how to fix this.  I can't tell somebody to stop coming to church unless it becomes like a super serious problem but how much more serious could it be!  IT's somebody's salvation!!!!!
Anyways, rant over.  I also got to translate for this guy gary from taiwan again.  I translated for him all three hours of church.  That was not super easy.  Also, it made me wish I spoke chinese too.  Just make it that much easier to translate to his exact understanding.  It was really cool though because I could kind of help teach him in the parts where the speaker or teacher was basically just saying the same thing over.  It happens...  GOOD THOUGH!
This week we also went on exchanges with the APs, i.e. my previous companion Elder Thompson.  Man it's so fun having been able to become friends with him.  I think my tiume with ELder THompson was some of the best times of my life.  Super fun to kind of re-experience that over the exchange.
Well, I'm running out of time.  Sorry for the shortness this week, but hey, I haven't seen Murphy in like 6 months!!!  Actually more like 4, but whatever!  He's my bud!
즐거운 하루 보내시기를 바랍니다!!!!

Elder Clawson will be arriving home on Friday July 25.  He will be arriving at Ontario airport at 8:00 that evening.  It will be a crazy long flight, but we absolutely CAN NOT wait!  Hooray!  He is ready to acknowledge the inevitable now....

Hey Everybody!

This week has been another good one.  It started out interesting because my companion had to go to army reserves for a couple days which is interesting.  He got to go alone and then I was in a threesome with the other elders in my house.  Not the funnest thing ever to do.  You only get to devote like half the time that you have to your own proselyting area.  It's not the worst thing ever, but it is stressful a bit when you're the one elder for an area.  I had never noticed before, but being a solo missionary would be sooooooo hard.  I'm really grateful for the fact that we go out two by two.  It really is a blessing.
Monday we went and played basketball with a bunch of other missionaries and that was fun.  Not the craziest thing ever but there was this other missionary that's like 6'7 I think, and he was a killer piano player.  I wouldn't have expected it, but he was super good.  Also really nice too.  I hate that I have to go home before I get to find out what's cool about all the missionaries.  I just wish I could know everybody on some level.  That would be fun, but alas, I cannot.
Monday night is when my companion went to the army.  That night we met one of the other elders investigators and this guy is a boss.  He met the missionaries and really liked what they shared but as soon as his parents found out they were super angry.  After trying to explain to them for weeks, his mom finally read some of the Book of Mormon and she decided it teaches good things.  She said "You keep meeting with them and if you decide to join with them I support you."  His Dad is still not fully on board, but he is going to have his son present the gospel to him and if he likes it, the Dad said he will also get baptized...  Yikes... But also cool.  They gave him the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet, and he really liked it as did his father.  Getting closer.
Tuesday was good I guess.  The 90 year old investigator dropped us.  Can't say I didn't see it coming.  We seem him all the time just because we cross paths frequently.  We also met with this new investigator who is on dialysis.  Not a desireable looking thing.  The scars on his arm are serious.  Not something I want, but I guess it comes from lifestyle to some extent so I have to choose now!  I say no.  Anyways, that investigator didn't have too much time, so we had to go before we could share too much.
Wednesday was cool.  We met this family we are teaching, and it was not a very good lesson.  I was just confused what they wanted because I thought they wanted us to help their son learn english but it doesn't really seem that way anymore...  I'm confused a little still BUT!  It was a learning experience on how we should teach in the future with them!   Just focus on those who actually have a developed attention span.  Also I now understand the phrase "like teaching a 2 year old".  Investigators all over the age spectrum!!!!
We also had district meeting which was good.  It was about teaching with the spirit, which is obviously the most important thing!  I actually studied all of that chapter in Preach my Gospel this week.  It's super good!  Well obviously it is.  I really have learned a ton lately just how awesome Preach my Gospel is.  I am convinced that anybody who studies it really intently, will know super well how to teach lessons more effectively, whether they be missionaries, sunday school teachers, anyone.  Super solid.
Thursday I had 4 investigator appointments scheduled, but only one of them happened!  One of the investigators dropped us which is convenient because we were concerned about how we would go about dropping him actually.  This is the guy who said he doesn't see how knowing the Book of Mormon is true would draw him closer to baptism.-_-  OKAY though!
The investigator we did meet is super solid though.  Super humble and willing to accept what we teach instead of what all the other church pastors say about what we teach.  Wise man.
Friday my companion came back!!!! SO awesome!  I have a companion again.  Also we had interviews that day...at our house!  It was good.  I really do like talking with president!  He's such a good guy.  I feel like the serious environment of interviews sometimes makes it harder to be his friend but I really love President Morrise.
The weekedn was good.  We taught a few more lessons and met some other investigators.  It was really sad actually.  Last night we met this man.  Through talking we found out he doesn't like churches because it just doesn't work for him.  None of them have brought him peace, particularly about the fact that he had a daughter who passed away when she was 2.  We tried to tell him about the plan of salvation and that he could live with his daughter again, but he wasnt interested.  Sad.  I feel bad for him.  I wish I could help him out more.  Too bad.
I really am grateful for the gospel in my life.  I'm grateful I have parents who taught me about it when I was young.  I studied this week in the Book of Mormon and found something I really like.  It's in Alma 38:12.  Only six words, but a really good message for missionaries.
"See that ye refrain from idleness"
I know that we need to always keep trying to move forward.  YAY Meet the Robinsons!  Good messages!  Well I love you guys and I guess I don't get too many more of these so READ THEM!!!!!!!!!!! or not.  Your choice...  no big repurcussions of any kind regardless :)

Hey Everyone!!! Especially Dad!  Well, all Father's for that matter.  HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

This has been another good week.  Really all over the place to be honest.  They picked up Elder Thompson last monday to go be AP, and so I was in a threesome with Elder Thorup and Elder Bae.  That's the same Elder Thorup that I trained.  Kid's a  boss.  I'm really glad I got to meet him on my mission.  Same with almost all my companions.  Glad to have met all of them.  Some not as boss as others, but all great.
So Monday we played basketball at our church and that was fun.  the court is outside and the floor is polished and painted so naturally one might assume that there is a lot of slipping that goes on.  Makes for an interesting game, but it's fun all the same.  After we went back, gave away Elder Thompson and then went back out to proselyte.  We had a few lessons and that was it for monday.  None of the lessons were too crazy either.  Truth be told it's people that we should probably drop anyways.  However!  for lunch that day we met one investigator who wanted to say goodbye to elder Thompson before he left.  Would have been totally fine if I didn't have to eat the portions of like 2 people.  Since the guy who bought it for us is old, he doesn't eat too much and struggles with meat, and as awesome as Elder Thompson is, he's a wuss about eating.  I swear that food stayed in my stomach for like three days.  I would eat like 4 bites of food and then be full for like 2 or 3 days.  No bueno.
Tuesday we had a couple lessons and we picked up a 90 year old investigator! 90!!!!  How crazy is that!?!?!?  Nice guy though.  Just going to have to teach very simple.  Lot's of trying to visit less actives and not much success.  It was good.
Wednesday I got my new companion, the previous AP.  He's a good guy.  His name is Elder Kim Jae Gyum and he's from a city called Daegu.  We were actually in the MTC at the same time.  Super fun.  He works hard, but since he's my first Korean companion, I guess I'm just learning how Koreans work hard.  It's totally different.  When I was with Elder Thompson it was get people's phone numbers and then try and turn them into investigators whereas this companion likes to work from previous investigators more.  Just different styles.
Thursday was good I guess.  We had a bunch of appointments but all but one of them cancelled which frustrated me so much.  Normally I would be fine, but I think I just felt mad at myself because I have this new companion and I'm trying to get him excited for the work in an area and when 5 of 6 appointments cancel, one can be frustrated in such an effort.
Friday we had all our appointments turn out in the end actually!  That was nice!  Super good.  Some investigators showed to not really have any potential, especially the guy who is in fact a buddhist missionary and wants to be a monk in his next life.  Just trying to learn English from us.  oh well.
Saturday there was a meeting in Seoul that we went to and it was good.  We learned about how to do better as leaders.  I really am grateful for that training.  I really want to help all those around me and a little help and direction is always good.  That day we had English class which was good too.  I felt good because I actually got to help those there understand English even just a little bit better.
Sunday was super good.  We didn't have our investigator with a baptismal date come to church but this other guy that's super awesome did!  His name is Gary and he's from Taiwan.  He speaks little to no Korean, so I get to translate for him!  I really do actually enjoy that because it makes me pay attention more, and I got so much more out of church.  Gary is a good guy and I'm not 100% but it looks like he wants to come closer to Christ really.
We also met a new investigator who's awesome.  I wish I had more time, but I have to go.  I love you all and am grateful to be a missionary here in Korea!

Hey Everyone!!!
How are you doing this week?  Our week has been pretty good.  Really busy, but that's typically a really good thing.  I'm a fan of busy weeks.  Monday was nothing too crazy.  It was raining on P-day and we had to do some cleaning which wasn't fun but it wasn't too bad.  I am not a fan of missionaries who don't clean.  The ven above our sink was ridiculous.  It's been broken for a while, and I was trying to just get all the grease off of it.  So nasty.  It was originally kind of like a creamish white, and before I got at it it was brown.  Not a pleasent experience.  I wen through like 4 cleaning instruments before the thing was clean in the end.  Ridiculous.
Tuesday we had to go to the mission headquarters for Mission Leadership Council.  That's always interesting.  I feel like sometimes it's not really like much is even achieved there.  We talk about things and then nothing happens.  I guess it's a good thing that Elder Thompson is the new AP because he was a little bit more passionate about that thought than I was so I think it'll be okay.  Elder Thompson is a boss.  He just does missionary work effectively and I've learned a ton from him.  Too bad he's being transferred, especially since I've gotten along better with him than with pretty much every other companion that I've ever had, BUT I will do my best to make my next companion and I have a similar relatonship as well.
My next companion is Korean and his name is Elder Kim and he's also a boss.  Elder Thompson is actually going to take his place in the office as assistant.  I've served close to 5 of the 6 APs that have been in the Seoul South mission.  I don't fee like that actually means anything, but it's still an interesting thought to have sometimes.
ANYWAYS!  on tuesday at MLC we were talking about what the mission motto could be and I may have come up with it.  It's not decided, but I feel like there a great deal of people that are behind it as a motto.  The only problem is that the people there didn't have a very good idea of what a motto is I feel like.  They were all going for like scriptures and long things but I feel like a motto is short and to the point.  "Just do it." or "be prepared" or something to that effect.  The one I thought of was YOSO! You Only Serve Once!  Which I guess isn't entirely true for everyone, but you get the sentiment!
Wednesday was nothing too crazy. no big news of report that day.
Thursday we had Zone Training meeting which was cool.  We as the zone leaders lead that and at first it started really slow/boring.  We kind of realized that and subconsciously decided that we need to do better at helping the missionaries in our zone feel the Spirit in that meeting.  As we worked and tried to be guided a little more in the training, it worked!  While it started kind of dry, by the end I felt really good about the training and how we had taught.  It was only about and hour and a half long when they can run anywhere from 2 to 3 hours, but I was happy with it.
That day the assistants (not Elder Thompson, he's not in the office yet) came to hear our training as well as to go on exchanges for the day.  It was super fun to be on exchanges with the assistants.  They're both really fun and I enjoy serving with both of them.  The missionary I was with was Elder Schofield and I learned a ton.  Specifically about making sure not to cast judgements upon people of whether or not they are interested.  That's not for me to decide.  I already knew that to an extent but reminders are always good.
Friday was interesting.  we finally met with the man who we had a baptismal date with before, and it was going good.  His younger sister who we thought hated us came in and I guess before whenever she came in the missionaries just always got kind of scared and uncomfortable but that didn't happen this time.  Since the investigator almost dropped us, I thought "well, we have nothing to lose and if we can help her understand the church more, why not?"  So we stuck around and talked to her.  She's a really nice lady, just legitimately concerned for her older brother.  Also has a really cute dog.  I asked her what the Pope does becuase I don't really know, and when she explained it still didn't make sense to me.  Not that I didn't understand what she said, I just still don't understand what his role is...  maybe some day I'll understand.
Saturday we had a super busy day.  We were all over the place with appointments and our ward had a bunch of stuff going on too.  English class was fun.  Big news though, the guy I talked about last week who can Filibuster for days is super prepared to receive the gospel.  He accepted a baptismal date for the 22nd and is really working for it.  He reads the Book of Mormon for 30 minutes everyday, and he would read more, but the print is too small for him to read for that long without getting a headache so we'll be getting him a big copy this week.  SOOO awesome!!!
He came to church yesterday too!  So sweet.
A couple weeks ago the stake president asked us to speak at the Stake High Council meeting, which was yesterday.  That was a super cool experience.  We only talked for 5 minutes and it was just about how we want to help the wards with missionary work in specific areas.  I have never felt the gift of tongues that much on my mission.  I have never had Korean flow that freely from my face and I certainly have never heard myself have that good of pronunciation.  Not tooting my own horn because I couldn't even speak that well again if I wanted, but I know I could if the Lord wanted it.  That's really all it was.  The Lord wanted these people to understand what we had to say, so I just opened my mouth and it was filled.  That was so cool to see.
I get my first Korean companion this week!  Super exciting!  I had a Korean-American companion before, but it's a little different.  Also there's a chance that I will be the only non-Korean missionary in my house for this last transfer!  How cool would that be?!?!?!?!

Anyway have a great week!

Have I ever told you what Korea is in Korean?
It's 한국! (han-gook) yes like the tires!

Hey Everyone!

This week has been kinda ridiculous! super fun, but kinda ridiculous.  Monday we didn't have too much going on, so we went out in search of a ton of less actives and found none, but we did find a ghost town.  No one there, and lots of broken windows.  I'll be honest, I kinda wanted to break one, but that's not what a disciple of Jesus Christ would spend time doing.  We were just making sure that all the apartments in that area were indeed abandoned so we could know that we wouldn't ever really have to go back.  Good use of time, but not too much fruits unfortunately.  Just saving time for future missionaries I suppose.
Tuesday we didmore of the same sort of thing with not too much success.  There was this one investigator that we met that we thought had a solid amount of interest, but it wasn't so.  It was really interesting.  We taught him a little and he was trying to get out of the appointment, so we decided we'd just testify and finish up.  He said he was a devout Christian so we thought "GREAT!  Why don't you say the prayer?"  Nope, no dice.  I ended up saying the prayer and I felt really sleepy, but i feel like the prayer that I said was more close to Heavenly Father than a lot of other ones for some reason.  I don't know if that was because I was trying to make it closer or if I was partially asleep, but nonetheless, was that way.
Wednesday we had district meeting, which was okay.  It 's kind of strange having been district leader for like 9 transfers and then not being district leader. I feel like they are just never as edifying for the people hearing the training as for the one training based on that experience.  I feel like when I gave the trainings I always learned SOOO much.  But now, when I hear them, I'm not sure if it's the people that give them, or what, but that people just don't put time or something.  I think that might be the case because there's this one district leader that was in the zone who always had fantastic district meetings, and I know that he put a great deal of time into his meetings, and the spirit followed.  Good stuff.
Afterwards we had a finding activity, but I didn't get to go because there's this teacher improvement program for new missionaries and I was doing that with a missionary so we didn't get to participate but I guess it went well.  I went from there on exchanges which were fun.  I was in an area in the mission that I've never been in before which was cool.  A first for me in a long time.  The exchange was good.  lot's of cool people that we got to meet.
Thursday we went to the temple and had Pday.  That was also cool.  Temple is always great.  Elder Thompson and I went to this bookstore afterwards to get a Korean study book, and then ate at this buffet restaurant which was utterly delicious.
Friday we had weekly planning which is whatever but then we went on exchanges again.  That was fun but kind of frustrating also.  At first my stomach was killing me but it finally stopped.  When it did, we went out to start talking to people and we started talking to this guy that was taking pictures of a tree, and it turned into 45 minute long worthless argument.  The missionary I was with was a Korean so they kind of stopped including me in the argument which was fine with me, but I was sick of wasting time just sitting there.  When we finally left he followed us and started arguing again.  I told him like 3 times at that point since we were going different places for him to just go his way and we'll go ours, it wasn't a valuable use of either of our time.  He still wouldn't give up, but finally he agreed to meet when the other missionary agreed that if they met and taught each other, that if my companion learned his church was true he'd convert.  So ridiculous BUT!  As a result when we went to visit a less active, they were not there, but on our way out there was a drunk guy I said hi to and turns out he was a less active of like 30 years!  Crazy right!  Super cool.  Finding lost sheep.
Saturday was CCCRRRAAAZZZZZYYYY!!!
So in the morning we went to a joint mission conference where Elder Cook came and spoke.  It was super awesome.  He spoke about missionary work and how there is more or less a formula for happiness for us as missionaries.  It was cool saw some friends from the Seoul Mission.
On the way home Elder Bae the Korean missionary I was on exchanges with, forgot his bag on the train so he had to go sort that out.  Elder Thompson and I went to meet this man who is the filibuster king of the earth!!!  The man talked for like 45 minutes straight without breathing.  I swear.  Crazyy.  But he did come to church yesterday so it was a victory in the end.
On the way home that night after our english class and pingpong activity, we were walking home and something special happened.  There was a man lying in the street, presumably past out drunk.  We decided that was not an appropriate place for someone to be passed out and picked him up and put him on the sidewalk.  Then he woke up and this other guy came by to see what was up.  We told him the story and he decided to go tell the police while we kept him from rolling back into traffic.  Guy was soooooooo toasted drunk and couldn't even stand up.  Fun story to tell later.
Sunday was cool.  Had an investigator at church.  Talked to lots of people.  Went to ward counsel which was good.  Good things going on.
This morning in study I had a cool experience.  Closing thoughts.  So I was kind of frustrated with my prayers being lame so I decided to just read from the book of Mormon and see what came up.  I was reading in Alma 29 and it's Alma the younger talking about desires and eventually says how he is more happy in the success of others than in his own really.  Yes, he originally says he is happy in his own success but then it gets better, but in the end it says his greatest joy is in others, and I wondered how to find that.  I looked it up in the institute study guide.  It had nothing, but it did talk about desires.  I need to desure to be happy in others success.  I'm happy to work for that sort of thing and I hope you guys can too.  It's true happiness I believe.
Have a great week!

Hey Everyone!
This week has been good.  I feel good about it still despite it's ups and downs.  First I want to apologize for misrepresenting the truth to you and telling you that The Pope was coming to Incheon to the Catholic church next door to ours, because he indeed was NOT!  I was super bummed.  There are probably some of you out there that knew better than me, but I digress, still great disappointment.  The confusion stemmed from a bunch of signs that said the Pope is coming and had pictures of the Catholic church on it too.  It had the phone number of the church and stuff on it, but it never explicitly states that the Pope was coming to Incheon, so I suppose it was just some level of presumptuousness on our part, BUT can you blame me?  There weren't posters for it anywhere else that I had been in Korea so I guess it was just exclusive congregations that they wanted to be in attendence or something, who knows...
Other things this week.  Tuesday we had a zone conference in Seoul where we went out and did it entirely on a mountain, hiking and doing things like that.  Not that bad of a hike to be honest.  Have I ever told you about how ridiculous people get about hiking in Korea?  It's probably the biggest hobby in Korea, or close to drinking, but drinking is typically a part of hiking here in Korea too.  Anyways, we were probably by some people's standards very ill suited for the hike based on the fact that most people were wearing jeans and didn't have walking sticks and things like that.  Still was super cool, fun activity, and I learned a lot.  I learned the difference between a queen ant and a wasp also.  They look super similar from an amateur like myself's point of view, and since they're both so large, easy to mistake.  That being said I ended up being scared of a queen ant.  I guess I've never seen one before though, so don't judge me.  On the spiritual side of learning, I learned even more the value of sharing testimony with people in our contacts, be they street or lessons or what have you.  Good to learn about and get to put into practice.  There's probably a missionary somewhere shuttering at the fact that I may have not known this somuch earlier in my missionary experience.  I did!  I was just reassured settle down!
Wednesday we had exchanges and I was with a missionary named Elder Lynn who is a great guy.  He's a newer missionary, but works hard and does the best he can which is all that can really be asked of someone.  Also a pretty fun and happy guy.  Does a pretty good job of keeping happy too!  I feel like I'm pretty good at that, but he seemed a little better so I was still learning from him.  Everyone can learn from pretty much anyone!  We also met a new investigator who was interesting because he said that he wants to know truth, but even in knowing the truth may still not acknowledge that the sourse he learned it from is true sort of.  weird thought process, but a nice guy no less.
We also had a finding activity where we talked to this taxi driver and he says "oh I know everything about your church", and so we asked him what we believe and he says "oh you know, repentence, Jesus Christ, God, the Atonement, you don't believe those".  Kind of an interesting statement considering it's exactly wrong!  We showed him in the Plan of Salvation pamphlet how we believe all those things, and he says "well where's John 3:16?" which is also in the Plan of Salvation pamphlet and then refused to believe that it was from our church...  most interesting man ever... at least he let us speak though!
Friday we had a pingpong activity because people in Korea love ping pong and it was good!  Fan of activities because you can reach out to people you may not otherewise be able to reach out to.  Same concept as teaching English on some level.
Saturday we went to a member's daughter's wedding which was... interesting?  In korean weddings they always have some prank-like activity.  In this one they had the groom spin around 10 times with his head facing the ground and then try and kiss the bride.  Yeah, he didn't finish the spins and came crashing down on the stage and knocked some things over.  Ya know.  Typical wedding things.  Good food though.  I'm a fan of Korean weddings because of the buffet.  Always super awesome.
Yesterday, we were intending to have a baptism for one of our investigators but, he has been dodging us super hard later.  Needless to say, he was not in fact baptized.  He says to come on Thursdays at 5 to visit him in his home and we do every single time but he's never there.  I feel like he's just trying to hide from all relligions right now.  He's technically a member of like 4 faiths, and he doesn't like any of them.  He was so close, but it looks like we have to back off a little bit now.  We actually are right now just kind of cleaning out our whole investigator pool and trying to fulfill it with prepared people.  It seems like that is the problem right now for us.  Finding those who are prepared instead of just those who will listen.  We'll keep going for that.
here's some Korean for you.
행복하다 (haeng-bok-ha-da)
to be happy!

Hey Everybody!!!
Another good week.  I know I've said it before and I'll say it again, but every week is a good week.  No such thing as a bad one.  100% factual statement.  At least for me these days.  We had initially intended to have a very busy week, but with a whole bunch of appointments cancelling, it didn't turn out as we planned the whole way through.  We have to kind of gut our investigator pool this week.  Lot's of people that don't really have interest.  Our ward mission leader said that he really would like it if we dropped some and tried setting up some activities so that we can more effectively reach out to youth in particular.  In Korea lately, the church has been kind of lacking in that side of things.  Lot's of older people really, but not too many young people, and if they do get baptized, they typically don't stick around for too long to be honest.  SO we will work on that a little bit!
This week we had district meeting and our district leader made us lunch beforehand which was delicious!  I am a fan of this district.  It's solid!  Good stuff going on.  Learned about strengthening the wards in which we serve even though our whole district serves within the same ward.  I guess that just means our ward is going to be crazy strong!  That's the plan.
I went on exchanges to my greenie area this week!  It was super cool and crazy awesome fun!  Didn't really get to see anyone I knew there before, but it was still fun to go back there and relive that a bit, in much better weather though!  I went with Elder Brewer who is the district leader there, and he's awesome.  He works hard and really cares about the people there in the ward.  Good stuff all around.
This weekend was stake conference which was super cool.  The area president came and spoke at the conference.  He was really awesome.  He kind of lit up the stake for having the wrong approach to missionary work.  The missionaries keep saying that the member aren't helping them out with the work.  President Ringwood said that is wrong.  Why?  Because it is not the missionaries work.  It is not the missionaries ward.  It never will be unless I move back here some day, and that is what the members of the church need to know right now.  The missionaries aren't the only ones doing the work, at least they shouldn't be.  The missionaries help the members to achieve the work needed in their ward.  I really hope I remember that when I get home.  It's a big deal to remember!
Well I gotta go, I need to go to the bathroom and I can't think of anything else t share really.  Have a great week everyone!!!
