FYI - Don't mix peaches and onions... Holes is, in fact, FICTION.
Love you Scott. =)

Subject: Peaches and onions do not cure bad smell, in fact they make it worse!

Hey President!
Wow, this is one of the last opportunities that I will have to email you. Kind of a somber occasion, but I will make an effort to make these last couple, or maybe this is the last one, but I'll make them good!
According to that statement, this week has been pretty good. It started out rough, what with transfers approaching, and not knowing what to expect, and then when Elder Webber came back, him being of such a different nature than Elder Mumford, it was tricky at first. I think that subconsciously I had it ingrained in my head that all greenies were just like Elder Mumford, but it's not the case haha. Not to say that's a bad thing, it's just different, but we're adjusting and we'll do just fine.
We found this awesome new investigator this week! I feel kind of bad because when we first met him he said that he wanted us to help him with his English 학권 and I didn't see that as productive so I never made him a priority, but he's awesome!!! Great investigator, sincere desire and a good person too! I feel like I didn't give him his due at first, but we're going to do our best to help him out.
For study, I decided to start going over Christlike attributes and I found it interesting (also in harmony with what Elder Witt trained about at trainer's training) that all Christlike attributes are indeed gifts and not merely acquired.
One miracle we saw this week happened with an investigator sort of person whose family has been trying to get her baptized for years. I got to be present at a lesson by virtue of a 식사 and it went way better than I've ever heard of it going before. Super cool experience to take part of.
It's been great serving with you President, and I'll certainly miss you!
Hey Everyone!!!This week has been a roller coaster! First off me and Elder Mumford had to part ways for good more or less, because he's getting sent up North to dwell with President Christensen and I am being outcast to the South to serve with President Morrisse. Not really sure what he's like but I bet he's great! I will miss Elder Mumford, but there's always BYU. I've legitimately come to the conclusion that BYU is just a place for missionaries so they can see all their buddies from their missions after they all go home. Pretty neat idea they had there. Too bad it wasn't actually made by a prophet, but is still church funded nonetheless!!!! VICTORY!
So last night, I was cooking, and I cut up some really strong onions, and so my hands smelled ridiculously like onions. I'm pretty sure it's like the onions sprayed the essence of their smell upon my hands. Nasty. So this morning, it still smelled bad, so I was looking around the house to try and find a way to get the smell off, and I found this peach body spray. I thought it was lotion at first so I sprayed it straight on my hands, and then I noticed it was more along the lines of perfume or cologne, and now my hands smell like peaches and onions. Contrary to what the story Holes would have you believe, it still smells bad. SPLOOSH IS A LIE!!!!!
So my new companion is Elder Webber, and he is from Puyallup, Washington. He's got good desire and is ready to work, unfortunately however, did not have the callouses to hang. His first full day in the field, we walked a relatively normal distance, maybe a little less, and it rocked his feet so hard! He's got blisters all over his feet now, and needless to say it makes it harder to walk a bit. We took it a little easier after that day just because of how hard it was on his feet. Also for some reason his msf card wasn't working so I got to pay for some things for him. YAYYYY!!! can anyone say law of consecration?
No hobos trying to stab each other this week, in face I don't think I've seen a hobo since then really. Maybe they all got arrested or something. Yeah right, the police do nothing in Korea. I've seen one person get pulled over, and I've certainly seen more people than that in violation of the laws!!! Maybe there's just something I'm not seeing that's going on.
My first district leader is going home!!! Well technically he could kinda already be home, but he's not because he's staying with his sister and his brother in law here in Korea. I got to see him on Friday (when they are supposed to actually go home) because there's a member here who he has a really good relationship with, and he helped out with a lesson, and by helped out, I mean taught. Fun experience.
Yesterday, there was a man baptized into our ward, not by us but by the other companionship in the same area. Cool thing was that it was my first baptismal candidate that I got to do a baptismal interview with!! Finally, been DL for 3 transfer and it just now comes along. Step it up my district. I'm sorry I can't say that I haven't had a baptism in 4 transfers, BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT! It was a cool experience.
Fun Korean time!!!!남대문 열었어요 (nam-dae-mun -yeor-eoss-eo-yo)
It's how you say your fly is down in Korean! How fun is that?!?! it literally mean's "your south gate is open"
teeheeWell monsoon season was a failure. It did start last week supposedly, but it hasn't rained since. Somebody stinks at predicting the weather. Oh wait, that's every meteorologist ever. Man I'm hungry. I think I am out of time too. Maybe I'll answer everyone's questions one day. Probably not. Certainly not while I'm a missionary. there's just not enough time!!!! There's never enough time, but I hope i'm entertaining at least!

Yes please - do not get stabbed by a hobo, or anyone else while on your mission or in your life in general. Where the heck did Scott pick up a word like hobo anyway? I haven't heard that word used in many many years - perhaps in all of Scott's lifetime.

Heres a clue for the reference in the subject line - The origin was one of the movies Scott watched over and over and over and over as a child. NOT a kids movie though and not Jurassic Park either. Another hint - Jon Voight. That's a big hint... I don't know what the 20 points are for - but I am sure they are worthwhile. =)

Love you Scottt! You sound so great.

Subject: The hobo can kill you in 1000 ways...

Hey President!!

I hope you've had a good week. Probably a little stressful what with transfers, but I hope that our prayers in your behalf help out.
This week has been pretty good for us. We had one appointment that actully showed up but we still didn't feel it right to count them as investigators to this point. Our one investigator is being kind of interesting right now. He wouldn't come to church and couldn't meet last week really either. He's pretty bummed that Elder Mumford but it will be good for him so he can learn it's not about the missionaries, but the Lord.
As training comes to end, it's easy to see how great of a period of my life this has been. I've grown a lot from Elder Mumford, and I hope he's grown a lot from me. I feel like he's asking more questions than ever right now, what with leaving the nest so to speak. I am excited to see what he does as a missionary. I know he is capable of great things.
Thanks for the heads up about study. I had kind of wondered whether the balance of the Old Testament was what I needed to study, so thanks for clearing that up. I'll make sure that I stay focused in what I study and what is necessary for invesitgators right now.
This awesome miracle came up last night when we were trying to visit less actives, and we somehow ended up on the same elevator as the son of a member! So cool. We didn't get to meet really, but we got their phone number and were able to give them another Book of Mormon because it seemed that they didn't have one anymore. Super cool to see!

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday President! I'm excited for what the next transfer brings!

-Elder Clawson

Hey Everyone!!!!
No objections yet so it's staying that way. This week has been eventful in various ways. So first off it was transfers week, and I feel like being sassy and not addressing what actually happened so you can either keep reading, or infer from my email to president. I will say that Elder Mumford is leaving the nest though, and getting seperated from me because of the mission split. Sad face. I will never get to see my missionary grandchildren from my 장남 (firstborn son). Gonna be sad, but that's okay, I'll get to see him after my mission at BYU.
Mackenzy! Congratulations on your mission call! Just don't let yourself get too stressed there in Temple Square, or bored. I've heard that since it's somewhat repetitive that missionaries there get kinda depressed, but that's just hear say. Also you're like the happiest person ever so I don't think it will be a problem. Congratulations!!!!!!!
So this week had a lot of fun stories, and I don't have much time, so if you can't understand, pray for guidance on what it's actually supposed to mean. I DON'T HAVE TIME TO PROOFREAD!
So we pretty much almost saw a hobo murder another hobo the other day when we were street contacting. There's this one place that we go to a lot, and usually there's anywhere between 2 and 5 hobos, and last week there were a bunch of them arguing, and there was this new hobo, a woman, and she seemed to really stir up a lot of problems. She started throwing this guy on the ground and kicking him, and then it just got worst. Eventually this other guy grabbed a bottle of soju and broke it like he was gonna stab somebody. Super sketchy. Even more sketchy is that we made an appointment to by one of the hobos dinner, but we didn't feel good about it, so we decided to pray, and it still didn't feel right, so we bailed. Not getting stabbed by a hobo with a bottle of alcohol on my mission.
We also got this awesome member meal, where the person who was feeding us, signed on to feed 6 elders, and bought a whole pig flank. Obviously it was butchered, but a WHOLE PIG FLANK!!! I swear I ate like half of it. There are certain Koreans that like you more if you eat a ton of food, and I think this member was one of them. I ate SO MUCH! Kinda ridiculous and morbidly obese, but hey, go big or go home.
Sunday night the miracle I talked about to president has way more fun to it. So certain apartments have code pads and locked doors you can't get through unless someone lets you in OR you sneak in behind someone else who is going in. Always fun. So we snuck in behind this lady, and it was really awkward so we went up to the 2nd floor while she waited for the elevator, and then would get on it when it came back down. We were going to board on the 2nd floor, but then someone was on the first floor and that would be awkward kinda too! So we were going to go down the stairs and we were just in this huge dilemna of awkward! There was no way out at this point!!! So we just got on the elevator going down from the 2nd, and then waited when it was on the first. At the very last second this other kid gets on the elevator, and is going to the same floor. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!~!! He's the son of the less active we were trying to visit! And it's not really very exciting after that, but it was super funny and cool and awkward, but the family never saw the awkwardness!!!
So with transfers, Elder Mumford is getting kicked out and sent North. We will not be in the same mission. Nor will either of our roommates, and don't think we let it go unvoiced that that was the case. We certainly harrassed Elder Mumford for that. Lots of FUN! My favorite Zone Leader, Elder Woodford, is going to finally leave his greenie area!!! Crazy!!! I'm staying here and training and district leadering again! Gonna be so fun! Also My district is growing in size by one companionship!!! Now there are a total of 5 companionships in my district! That's a zone in some missions! How cool is that!>?

Sorry when i get in a hurry I get really hyper and energetic. I think I missed a story but that's okay. Maybe another day. Also have fun!

Also 20 points to the first person whose not in my nuclear family that can recognize the movie reference in the subject line

Bye!!! Love you!!!!!!

AND one more thing... There has been mention of Scott's Korean friend Murphy Choe - and here he is. They had lunch a couple of weeks ago. Murphy is doing some kind of military service and has been assigned to a zoo. I guess Scott told him how much I like giraffes and he took this delightful (?) picture of a giraffe while working. Thanks Murphy - for the picture and for being such good friends with Scott.

Photo: Here's clawclawclaw. And i said hi for you and your mom :D he says hi too haha
Murphy looks a little frightened...
Photo: Here's a giraffe for your mom :D
I had to wait a long long time to finally shoot it's butt
I have never seen a giraffe from this perspective before.
Did you know that they can't sneeze?

I am sure that if any of us had an appointment with Scott, we would not punk it or him. Did I use that verb correctly? Not at all sure...

Fun side story, Peter Rodriguez, Scott's good friend from high school came to visit us this week. He has been on the east coast in training for the navy over the past eight months. He kept saying "That's classified." so evidently, Peter knows things we don't know. Wow. Anyway, he shared with us that he wrote a letter to Scott, in South Korea, and was called in to his commanding officer to explain who Scott was and why was Peter writing to some guy in South Korea. Yikes! All is well now. Good luck Peter wherever you go from here! So impressed by you. =)

photo.JPGphoto.JPG
Peter and Alex. Always so nice to see them. If you look closely, they are imitating Scotts rice cheeks in the fun picture. Friends can tease but family doesn't tease Scott about the rice cheeks. He takes his weight very seriously. Actually, a little too seriously.

Subject: Try to talk to like 500 people, get 9 appointments, no one meets. Seems Legit :)

Hey President!!
This week has been similar to the past couple. Setting lots of appointments and none of them coming through really. I think we had 9 or 11 of them punk this week, but that's okay, maybe they'll meet later.
Study this week has been good, still reading the standard works and I finally found something in the Old Testament that made sense to me. It took 30 chapters, but I found some things that rung true. Not to say things prior didn't but this was new to me which was nice. Also, I was wondering if you knew of any ways or methods that would help me to increase my understanding. Anything would be great.
Our solitary investigator is still awesome. We tried to give him a baptismal date, but he said he couldn't commit at that time. Kind of understandable to me, but I think he will come around. We actually came with him to the fireside last night. He really enjoyed it. Very fortunate for that to have been there.
Training is going good as ever. Still want to train again next transfer, but I'll do my best to be happy with what ever comes of it. We came to the office for pass off this morning, and Elder Mumford didn't pass off but I think he did a good portion of it. I think he's trying to get some last bits of wisdom from me as his trainer before we part ways, but I'm not too sure I have too much more to give to be honest.
As for miracles this week, I think seeing our investigator have real desire to progress and do what's right by our heavenly Father. He is a great man, and it is a huge blessing to see him strive to be great.
Have a great week president!
-Elder Clawson
Hey Everybody!!!
Anyone getting tired of that being the first thing that I say in all my emails? If you are just say the word and I will do my best to come up with more clever things. Anyways, I'll try and be fun this week with my email, but I'm not too sure how well I can do that. I am such a boring person as you all probably very well know.
So I guess we could start from last week on Monday! So there's these places that are called academy's, and they're basically like sylvan, or extra help places for students, BUT if you don't go to them, you're usually less intelligent than those that do, really backwards from America. ANYWAYS, there's all sorts of different places like this. There's obviously math, and science, and then English academies for foreign language help and stuff, and then there's music academies. I'm sure that you could tell where this is going. There's a music academy that me and my companion walk by all the time and always here people playing drums. We decided to go in and see if we could go play for a little while if we paid some money. Turns out, we can! And we did! Also, there was a guitar and an amp in the room with the drums, so we asked if me and my companion could just jam. At first I'm sure the guy that owned the place thought that we wouldn't be good because we are foreigners, but pleasant to his surprise, we do not fail at musics!!! In fact to the extent that he came in and took a picture of us jamming and may or may not blow it up to be an advertisement for his academy. Yes, even white people can play there. Super fun experience
So that was P-day, also my companion was so worried about it being against the rules, even though I and the zone leaders reassured him several times over that it was just fine, that he decided to call president to make sure it was fine. He did, and it was pretty funny. Legitimately walked around the house pacing like 4 laps, at least. It was hilarious and me and one of the zone leaders were laughing more or less the whole time. Also it seemed like my companion was trying to make it against the rules. Pretty funny experience. NOT against the rules, even ask president. In fact, they used to have a band that toured in Korea to increase the notoriety of the church... Maybe it will be started again and you are reading the letter of the future lead guitarist?!?!?! How crazy would that be? Not very to answer that question.
In case you hadn't read the letter to president, this week was very similar to the last few, lots of appointments, none of them coming through. Even our one investigator, we just meet him randomly on a whim the balance of the time. Pretty interesting. Maybe one day I'll get some more investigators, but that's not important really. What's important is that I'm doing my best to help every have the chance to have an appointment to learn with us!!!! That's the real thing that matters. That being said there are no super fun appointments to share about, save but one!
That one investigator that we do have is a boss. Solid at English, and apparently can sing Still Loving You by the Scorpions really well. Haven't seen it yet, but I wouldn't put it past him. He is a man of many talents. Also is apparently really smart, double majored in Chemical engineering and Electrical engineering. Yeah, I'm bragging for my investigator. Gotta have something to boost my self esteem about him. He also came to this big fireside with us where the main speaker was the soon to be new mission president for the Washington Seattle mission. Sorry Kayvon, you just missed having a Korean mission President, however, you do get to go to the mission that one of the office elders in my mission is from.
This weekend is transfer calls which is exciting, especially since something is going to change if not in our companionship than in our house with this upcoming transfer. If I stay, I will be in the south mission, but if I get transferred I could end up in the North. Really I've never been in the actual bounds of what will be the Seoul mission, so I'd almost call myself a Seoul south missionary. I won't know for sure that I'll be in either mission until the 1st of July, because there's always the potential for emergency transfers and such. Always can be kinda crazy what with those things, but I don't anticipate any of that.
I'm running low on time, so I'll teach you a phrase that functions really well in Korean Ebonics as used by our Ginger AP.
외냐하면 (wae-nya-ha-myeun) it literally means "if you ask why", but it functionally is about the same as because, but you have to use it to start a sentence, kinda hard to explain, but it's a good phrase nonetheless.
I love you all and you are all awesome! I kid you not! have a great week in my absence! Well, i guess by that virtue it would be more like have a great next 14 months. What the ten months?!?!?!...

This letter is from Scott dated June 2, 2013. I missed that part in the copy and paste. Ooops.

Forgive me, but I don't get the reference to the wild creature, the jaguar or why Scott would name him Phoenix. Maybe the PS.... Maybe because Murphy Choe works at the zoo... Maybe because I am late in posting this and I just don't remember the reference... Scott had a pet lizard once, a bearded dragon. This lizard had a new name on a fairly regular basis most notably Santa Claus and Grizzly Adams. He was never called Phoenix.

Yes Scott, zoos are legit. Missionaries are even more legit. Way more. =)

Subject: When I have a wild creature as a pet, it will be a jaguar named phoenix

Hey President!
This week was a long one and went by quickly at the same time. You know how missionary time is, something like the most confusing thing ever haha. This week, we had set maybe 10 or 15 appointments for various points during the week, but somehow all of them managed to cancel or not show up. Makes for a good test of your patience. It was also a busy week with a bunch of activities and the like.
That investigator we talked about last week was able to come with us to that hiking thing I called you about at 6:45 on saturday (i am very sorry about that by the way). He had a super good experience, and made lots of friends. He would have been at church, but he hurt himself during the hike in some way, and wasn't able to make it. We didn't get to meet with him aside from that this week, but he is the only one that will continually correspond with us.
Yesterday, while we were trying to go to the church for an appointment that ended up punking us, we walked past this kid, and just said hi, because we thought we needed to hurry, but then Elder Mumford turned around and talked to him, and he was super nice and willing to meet! He didn't know his schedule too well, so we couldn't set an appointment for an exact day and time, but it was still a miracle I'd say.
Study went well this week, especially when I was preparing for district meeting on wednesday. I didn't know where to begin, but I felt like looking at the 12 week training book, and there was a lot that I got from that! It was a really cool opportunity to see that there is somewhat of a parallel between that saying "Everything I need to know, I learned in primary", but for missionary work. I'd say it goes, "Everything I need to know, I [should have] learned in 12 week." Really cool opportunity for me.
Training has been going great! As this 12 week period draws to an end, Elder Mumford seems to be becoming very analytical of his missionary work. I think he does a great job, but every now and then I'd agree there are still things he needs growth on, but who doesn't? I still need a great deal of growth.
This period of training has been legitimately the best thing that could have happened to me during my missionary service. I have loved the opportunity to serve others both as district leader and as trainer. I am so grateful for the opportunity the Lords has given me, and I typically am not the type to 부탁 things, but if it's in the cards, I would love to train again. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and thank you so much for entrusting it to me.
Thank you so much for everything President! You're the best!
-Elder Clawson
Hey Everyone!!!
This has been a pretty busy week! Pretty busy, but at the same time, like i said in the email to president, every single appointment that we had set in advanced didn't work out. How neat is that? To answer that question, not neat. Not neat at all. Twas a busy week nonetheless!
Lot's of fun experiences! This week on tuesday, we had intended to do this service project, but when we got there it was at another church, didn't phase us, but as soon as we sat down to talk with the guy who would tell us what to do, this otherguy came over and told us to leave. Fun experience. What I learned from it, people at other churches in Korea don't want our help. Also they are crazy and have like 65 year-old aerobics instructors for preachers. Also these aerobics instructors are supposedly legally recognized students of theology... Who would have guessed that...
On wednesday, we had district meeting and English class. district meeting was sweet, was not in a basement though... That was kind of a bummer. Oh well. It was super cool how I trained about something, and then did my best to adhere to it, but regardless I didn't even get an opportunity to adhere to my own training this week. We were talking about keeping investigators at church rather than just getting them there once, and lessons with members and such. All of our lessons this week were taught on the street so that was somewhat harder to pull off haha.
English class is just English class. Never really like it, never really dislike it. This week was... interesting?... The topic for discussion was fashion, and I was supposed to help out the men that attended the class to express interest in fashion. That was a journey. Fortunately I got on the topic of the middle east and got one of the class members to go off on a crazy tangent about how he used to be a muslim so that he could work for a company in Saudia Arabia, and his explanation was so that he could get money. Fun guy. Probably one of my favorite English class patrons as fate would have it.
Thursday we had a surprise mission conference sort of. It was about the mission and the split that will occur on the first of July! How crazy is that?!?!?!?!?! I may not return home from the same mission that I left America for. That's kinda nuts. Anyways, we got to wear P-day clothes to the conference, and it was really fun. There was a bunch of fun activities, and we got to have chicken bakes from costco for lunch. So awesome. Also I realized that outside of the people that I came to Korea with, my friends circle in the mission isn't very broad... sad face... But then at the same time all the people I came to the country with are all super good buds so it's okay!
Friday wasn't anything super crazy, but was a good day for missionary work. It's been tough lately because we are trying to go to literally every single less active in the ward records, and in trying to visit legitimately 30 less actives in the past 2 weeks, we've successfully made contact with maybe 3. Maybe less. Regardless, Friday we went around to try and visit a bunch, and let me tell you right now, that the address system in Korea is more confusing than trying to write an essay out of alphabet soup (challenge given, should you choose to accept it). Anyways, we meant to visit like 5 houses, found 3 and only one of them was the actual person. That person just happened to have an appointment with the other elders in our area like an hour and a half after we showed up all of the sudden at their house. Coincidence? I think not!!! (name that movie!) We got to share a good message with them, and they happen to be a part member family as well. Yesterday at church they showed up in like the last ten minutes and it was awesome! super cool!
Almost out of time, last thing to share. So saturday we went on this hike, hiking is really popularly in Korea just so you know, and it was sweet! We got this investigator to come and he made a bunch of buddies in the ward and lots of his questios were answered! Super sweet experience. Unfortunately since he messed up an old injury from when he was younger he couldn't make it out to church. Apparently dude was somewhat of a ladies man in high school though! Dude's a boss. All your investigators are a boss when you're a missionary. Except the one who has a crush on you, he's kinda creepy... for real though.
